TRADITIONAL DESIGN: The most popular traditional styles originate from British Colonial revival, 18th century English, 19th century neoclassical and French country but can be seen to have origins in even the exotic lands of the east. The most recognizable distinctions include carved moldings, fine woodwork, graceful lines, and sturdy, finely crafted furniture. Generally colors are of an unfuzzy palette and enhanced with bronze accents and warm wood tones for an inviting, comforting interior.
MODERN DESIGN: Modern kitchen designs take the opposite approach, ushering calm through the use of open space, clean lines, basic shapes, and no adornment. Distinguishing features may include bold colors in contrast to muted tones, complex patterns, and primarily the use of form and open space with the absence of all mouldings and visible wood grain.
TRANSITIONAL DESIGN: Transitional décor embraces the comfort of traditional design and the stylish looks of modern design. Warm neutrals rule: cream, taupe, tan, khaki, gray, with the occasional hint of chocolate or espresso brown thrown in to ground the palette. Patterns, if used at all, should be understated; it is monochromatic with an explanation point of sophistication. If you need a jolt of color simply add a designer pendant light with a touch of turquoise to your new kitchen design.
